The Animals – House of the Rising Sun (1964) (vidéoclip & paroles)
The Animals est un groupe rock britannique fondé en 1962 avec Eric Burdon comme chanteur. Le groupe va faire partie des premiers à promouvoir le rhythm and blues noir américain en Europe.
The House of the Rising Sun n’est pas une chanson originale du groupe. Un des plus vieux enregistrements (1928) de la chanson serait la version de Texas Alexander. C’est une chanson folk provenant des États-Unis qui a déjà eu pour titre « Rising Sun Blues » lorsqu’elle était chanté par Clarence Tom Ashley en 1932. Il serait difficile de retracer avec exactitude les débuts de la chanson et de savoir qui a été l’auteur au départ. La chanson a été reprise plusieurs fois avant que le groupe l’enregistre.
La chanson pourrait faire allusion à un bordel ou une maison de prostitution mais elle pourrait aussi représenter une prison pour femme dans La Nouvelle-Orléans.
Le titre se retrouverait sur le premier album du groupe « The Animals » sorti en 1964.

La chanson a été reprise par beaucoup d’artistes : Bob Dylan, The Supremes, The Platters, The Everly Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Hank Williams, Jr., Tracy Chapman, Gregory Isaacs, Sinéad O’Connor, Jon Bon Jovi, Wyclef Jean, Tori Amos, Muse et j’en passe.
En 1940, Libby Holman avait enregistré la chanson bien avant le groupe The Animals.

En 2014, Ian Head propose un Drum Cover sur la version de la chanson du groupe heavy metal « Five Finger Death Punch ».
En 2013, Asaf Avidan s’offre un orchestre et propose une version bien originale de la chanson.
